Donation form

The National Library is not able to receive spontaneous donations of collection material. However, you are welcome to contact us with an inquiry via the form below.

During the autumn of 2025, our ability to accept donations in certain collections will be limited. However, if you wish to make a donation, please fill out the form and we will get back to you with more information.

Before donating to the National Library

Send us lists and photographs of the material

To help us assess the material, we kindly ask that you provide lists including, for example, titles, authors, publishers, year of publication, and language. We also welcome photographs showing what the material looks like and its condition. For printed material, please photograph the cover and title page. If the material is digital, you are welcome to send screenshots of the folders or files you wish to donate.

Do we already have your item?

Start by searching for your material in our catalogues: Regina External link, opens in new window. and Libris External link, opens in new window. (for printed material) eller Svensk mediedatabas External link, opens in new window. (for audio, moving images, and computer games). If the title is not listed, there is a good chance we would be interested in receiving it. In some cases, the catalogue record may state that a particular item is missing from the National Library.

You can also consult our list of items we are especially looking for.

Is your donation in good condition?

The National Library primarily accepts material in good condition, as it needs to endure long-term use for research purposes.

The National Library is not obliged to accept donations

We reserve the right to decline a donation. Unless otherwise agreed, we may later deselect material that is deemed not to enrich the Library’s collections. The same applies if the material is in poor condition or if we already hold duplicates.

Ownership and copyright

A donation means that ownership is transferred to the National Library. The donated material will be stored and made available for research and study on-site at the Library. Unless otherwise agreed between the Library and the rights holder, copyright remains with the rights holder.

Access to your donation

It may take some time before a donation becomes available and visible in our catalogues. For ethical or legal reasons, access to parts of a donation may be restricted for a period of time following the donation. Such conditions will be specified in the donation agreement.

Thank you – and welcome!

Anyone who contributes to the National Library’s collections is, of course, always welcome to visit and explore the material.

Assessment and decision

Our experts assess the material and compare it with what is already in the collections. If it concerns single titles that fill gaps in our collections, the assessment is usually simple and quick. We usually accept material that is in good condition and complements the collections.

However, if it concerns a donation of larger or complex material, the preparation takes longer because various issues must be weighed in the decision. The first thing we assess is whether the material is relevant to the National Library's collections, and then what resources need to be used to preserve and make the material available.

If it is digital material, the National Library can in some cases help with making a selection if you do not want to donate the entire digital medium. A data medium refers to the storage medium where the digital information is saved, such as a hard drive or a floppy disk.

If the donation consists of unpublished material, you will be required to sign a donation agreement in connection with the delivery of the material.

For most donations, we will contact you during the process to learn more about the material and answer any questions about selection or other matters. Once all assessments have been made, a decision is made and we will then get back to you.
